You Already Know: Learning to Trust Your Intuition

Have you ever known something before you had the chance to think about it?

Maybe it was a feeling about a person.

A decision.

An opportunity.

A place.

Or maybe it was something as simple as what you wanted to wear that morning.

Imagine standing in front of your closet.

Your eyes immediately go to a red shirt.

You smile.

That's the one.

You don't really have to think about it. Something about it simply feels right today.

But then your mind gets involved.

You start looking through the rest of your closet.

You notice a yellow shirt you usually love.

Maybe this one is even better.

You put it on.

You look in the mirror.

There's nothing wrong with it. You usually feel great wearing it.

But today?

It's just not it.

So eventually, you go back to the red shirt.

The one you wanted from the beginning.

You put it on, look in the mirror, and smile.

Of course.

It was the one all along. :)

It's such a small example.

But how often do we do exactly this with much bigger things?

Sometimes, somewhere within us, we already know.

And then we overthink.

We analyze.

We make lists of pros and cons.

We ask five different people what they would do.

We search for reassurance.

We question whether we're being reasonable.

And somewhere between all those opinions and possibilities, we lose connection to the quiet voice that was there from the beginning.

Our own.

The Quiet Voice Within You

Intuition doesn't always arrive dramatically.

There isn't necessarily a big sign from the Universe or an overwhelming feeling telling you exactly what to do.

Sometimes it's incredibly subtle.

A quiet yes.

A gentle no.

A feeling of expansion.

A feeling that something is slightly off, even when you can't explain why.

A person you immediately feel comfortable around.

An opportunity that excites you before you've had time to calculate every possible outcome.

A place that somehow feels like Home.

Sometimes you won't have a logical explanation for it yet.

You simply feel it.

And that can be difficult to trust.

We live in a world where we're often encouraged to explain everything.

Why do you want this?

Why don't you want that?

Are you sure?

What if you regret it?

And of course, thinking things through is important.

There are decisions that deserve research, patience, logic, and careful consideration.

Trusting your intuition doesn't mean making every decision impulsively.

It means not automatically dismissing what you feel simply because you can't immediately explain it.

When Overthinking Gets Louder Than Intuition

The more we think about something, the harder it can sometimes become to hear ourselves.

One thought becomes five.

Five become twenty.

And suddenly, the thing that initially felt so clear doesn't feel clear at all.

What if I'm wrong?

What will other people think?

What if there's a better option?

What if I make the wrong decision?

This is often where we start looking outside of ourselves.

We ask other people.

And then another person.

And maybe one more, just to make sure.

There is nothing wrong with asking for advice.

Sometimes another perspective is exactly what we need.

But there is a difference between seeking perspective and asking someone else to make your decision for you.

No one else is living your life.

No one else knows exactly what something feels like inside of you.

And sometimes, after asking everyone else what they think, you realize you knew what you wanted before you ever asked.

Intuition or Fear?

This is where it can become a little more complicated.

Not every strong feeling is intuition.

Sometimes fear speaks first.

Sometimes an old wound does.

Sometimes anxiety, insecurity, or a past experience makes us want to run from something that is actually safe.

So how do you know the difference?

There isn't always a perfect formula.

But I have found that intuition often has a certain quietness to it.

Fear tends to demand your attention.

It spirals.

It creates endless scenarios.

It wants an answer right now.

Intuition can be much simpler.

This doesn't feel right.

I want to do this.

Something is telling me to wait.

I feel safe here.

And then the mind starts explaining why that feeling couldn't possibly be enough.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is create enough quiet to hear what is underneath all that noise.

Take a walk.

Journal.

Pray.

Meditate.

Spend some time alone.

Put your phone away.

Stop asking for opinions for a moment.

And ask yourself:

What did I feel before I started overthinking this?

You might be surprised by how quickly the answer comes back.

Learning to Trust Yourself Again

Self-trust is something we build.

Every time you listen to yourself, you strengthen it.

Every time you honor a boundary you knew you needed, you strengthen it.

Every time you say yes because something genuinely feels right—not because you feel pressured—you strengthen it.

Every time you say no without needing to create an elaborate explanation, you strengthen it.

And even when you make a decision that doesn't turn out the way you hoped, you can still trust yourself.

Because trusting yourself doesn't mean believing you'll never make a mistake.

You will.

We all do.

It means knowing that even if something doesn't work out, you will be there for yourself afterward.

You will learn.

You will adjust.

You will grow.

And you will choose again.

Perhaps that's one of the deepest forms of self-trust:

Not needing a guarantee before allowing yourself to move forward.

You Already Know

Maybe there is something in your life right now that you've been thinking about over and over again.

Something you've analyzed from every possible angle.

Something you've asked other people about.

Something you keep coming back to.

For a moment, put all the opinions aside.

Put the pros and cons aside.

Put the shoulds aside.

Take a breath.

And listen.

What does your inner voice say?

Not the loudest voice.

Not the most fearful voice.

The quiet one underneath it all.

Maybe you don't need another answer.

Maybe you simply need to trust the one that's already within you.

Just like that red shirt hanging in your closet.

Sometimes you knew from the very beginning.

Your intuition is on point.

Trust it.

Trust yourself. 🤍
