How to Get Through the Tough Days

Some days are just hard.

There doesn't always need to be a deeper meaning behind them.

Sometimes you wake up feeling heavy.

Sometimes something happens that hurts.

Sometimes you're disappointed.

Sometimes you're overwhelmed.

Sometimes an old feeling you thought you had moved past suddenly comes back.

And sometimes you can't even explain what's wrong.

You just know that today feels harder than yesterday.

On those days, the first thing I want you to remember is this:

Don't fight yourself.

You don't need to immediately turn the day around.

You don't need to force yourself to be positive.

You don't need to pretend you're okay when you're not.

Let today be what it is.

Allow Yourself to Feel It

We spend so much energy trying not to feel uncomfortable emotions.

We distract ourselves.

We stay busy.

We scroll.

We tell ourselves to get over it.

We wonder why we're still upset.

But sometimes the only way forward is through.

Allow yourself to really feel what is there.

Cry if you need to cry.

Write.

Sit in silence.

Go for a walk.

Talk to someone.

Pray.

Put on music.

Lie in bed for a little while if that's what you need.

It doesn't feel good, I know.

But you don't have to be afraid of your emotions.

Feelings move.

They change.

And sometimes, after allowing yourself to sit with something instead of constantly resisting it, you notice that the heaviness slowly begins to shift.

Maybe not immediately.

Maybe not completely.

But little by little.

Take It Day by Day

You don't have to figure out your entire life on a difficult Tuesday afternoon.

Sometimes you only need to get through today.

And if even that feels overwhelming, get through the next hour.

Have something to eat.

Drink some water.

Take a shower.

Open the window.

Step outside.

Put your phone away.

Take one deep breath.

Then another.

Ask yourself:

What would make today just 5% easier?

Not perfect.

Not amazing.

Just a little softer.

Maybe the answer is canceling a plan.

Maybe it's calling someone you love.

Maybe it's ordering your favorite food.

Maybe it's going to sleep early.

Maybe it's getting out of the house.

Maybe it's doing absolutely nothing for a while.

You don't have to fix everything today.

A Hard Day Doesn't Mean You're Going Backwards

This is something I think we all need to remember.

You can have been doing incredibly well and still have a bad day.

You can be healing and still cry about something you thought you'd moved past.

You can be happy with your life and still feel sad sometimes.

You can be grateful and overwhelmed at the same time.

You can love yourself and still have moments of self-doubt.

One difficult day does not erase all your progress.

And if tomorrow feels heavier again?

Don't panic.

Don't immediately tell yourself that you're back at the beginning.

You're not.

Let the day happen.

Feel what you need to feel.

Then keep going.

Don't Make Today Mean More Than It Does

When we're emotional, our minds can turn one difficult moment into a story about our entire lives.

Nothing is working.

I'm never going to feel better.

Everything is going wrong.

I'm back where I started.

But today is a day.

It isn't your entire life.

Be careful about making permanent conclusions from temporary feelings.

If you can, give yourself time before making a major decision from a place of intense emotion.

Sleep on it.

Come back to it when your nervous system feels calmer.

What feels impossible tonight might look very different tomorrow morning.

Take Care of the Person Who Is Having the Hard Day

Imagine someone you deeply love came to you and said:

"I'm having a really hard day."

Would you tell them to stop being dramatic?

Would you criticize them for not being productive enough?

Would you remind them of everything they're doing wrong?

Probably not.

You might make them something warm to drink.

You might sit beside them.

You might hug them.

You might remind them that they don't have to figure everything out tonight.

So why not offer yourself some of that same tenderness?

Take care of yourself as if you were someone you deeply loved.

Because you are.

Forgive Yourself

Sometimes the pain we're carrying isn't only about what happened.

It's about what we think we should have done differently.

I should have known better.

Why did I allow that?

Why did I stay?

Why didn't I say something?

Why did I make that decision?

But you made choices with the version of yourself you were at that time.

Maybe you didn't know what you know today.

Maybe you were doing the best you could with what you had.

Maybe you had to live through the lesson to understand it.

Forgive yourself for the tough lessons.

It's okay.

It's in the past.

You can leave it there now.

You don't need to keep punishing yourself for something you've already learned from.

Take the lesson.

Keep the wisdom.

And let yourself put down the rest.

Tomorrow Is Another Day

There will be days when none of this suddenly makes you feel better.

And that's okay too.

You don't need every difficult day to end with a breakthrough.

Sometimes the victory is simply getting through it.

Going to bed.

Closing your eyes.

And giving yourself another chance tomorrow.

Because eventually, something shifts.

You laugh without forcing it.

Something excites you again.

The thing that felt enormous starts feeling smaller.

You notice the Sun coming through your window.

You realize you haven't thought about that thing for a few hours.

And one day, almost unexpectedly, you realize:

I'm okay again.

So when today feels heavy, don't ask yourself to carry tomorrow too.

Take it day by day.

Hour by hour if you need to.

Feel all the emotions.

Allow them.

And when you're ready, let them move through you.

Keep your head high toward the future. ☀️

There is still so much waiting for you.

A Few Things to Remember on the Tough Days 🌿

  • I don't have to solve everything today.

  • Feeling something doesn't mean it will last forever.

  • A difficult day doesn't erase my progress.

  • I am allowed to rest without feeling guilty.

  • I can ask for support.

  • I don't have to believe every thought I have when I'm overwhelmed.

  • I can forgive the version of myself who didn't know what I know today.

  • Tomorrow is another day.

And above all:

Be gentle with yourself today.

You deserve your own love on the difficult days, too. ☀️
